What is a roofing calculator?
A roofing calculator estimates the sloped roof area and converts that area into practical ordering units such as roofing squares and shingle bundles. The most important distinction is between the building's flat footprint and the actual roof surface: a pitched roof has more surface area than the horizontal area beneath it.
SonoCalculator supports three workflows: a simple footprint-and-pitch estimate, a directly measured roof area, and a multi-plane mode for roofs made from several rectangles. This makes the calculator useful for quick planning as well as more detailed takeoffs.
Roof area from footprint and pitch
If the roof footprint is rectangular, start with:

Understanding roof pitch
A pitch written as 6/12 means the roof rises 6 units vertically for every 12 units of horizontal run. The ratio is dimensionless, so the same math works whether the rise and run are measured in inches or another consistent unit.
A 12/12 pitch has a 45° slope and a factor of √2, or about 1.414. As pitch increases, actual roof area increases even when the building footprint stays the same.

What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface area. It is a trade unit used to simplify material quantities and pricing:
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100A roof area of 2,350 ft² equals 23.5 roofing squares before any waste allowance. When ordering products sold only in full packages, the final number of bundles or packs must be rounded up.
Shingle bundles per square
Many asphalt shingles are packaged so that about three bundles cover one roofing square, but this is not universal. Heavier architectural or luxury products may require four or more bundles per square.
For that reason, SonoCalculator does not hard-code three bundles as a hidden rule. The Bundles per square input is user-adjustable so the calculation can match the product packaging.

Roofing projects usually require more material than the measured surface area because of cuts, starter courses, hips, ridges, valleys, dormers, penetrations, breakage and layout losses. The calculator applies waste as:
Planned Area = Measured Roof Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)There is no single waste percentage that is correct for every roof. Simple gable roofs may need less extra material than complex roofs with multiple valleys and dormers. Use the product instructions, supplier guidance and installer experience rather than relying on a universal default.
Why the footprint can underestimate roofing material
A common mistake is to multiply building length × width and treat that as final roof area. That only measures horizontal projection. A sloped surface is longer than its horizontal run.
At 6/12 pitch, the factor is roughly 1.118, so a 1,800 ft² footprint corresponds to about 2,012 ft² of roof surface before waste. At 12/12 pitch, the same footprint becomes about 2,546 ft².
Simple gable roofs
For a symmetrical gable roof with the same pitch on both sides, footprint area × pitch factor is a practical shortcut when the footprint includes the area to the roof edges being covered. The multiplier already accounts for both sloped sides because it is applied to the entire horizontal projection.
Do not double the result again. That is another common estimating error.
Hip roofs
A simple hip roof can often be approximated from footprint × pitch factor if the whole roof has one consistent pitch. However, hip cuts and ridge/hip caps can increase material waste compared with a simple gable.
For complex hips, separate roof-plane measurements can improve accuracy.
Multi-plane roof mode
Real roofs often contain additions, dormers, porches or intersecting sections. In Multi-plane mode, enter the actual sloped length and width of each rectangular roof plane and let the calculator total them.
Total Measured Roof Area = Σ(Plane Length × Plane Width)This mode is particularly useful when each plane has already been measured directly, because no pitch multiplier is needed for dimensions taken along the sloped roof surface.
Measured roof area mode
If you already have total sloped roof area from plans, aerial measurements or a professional takeoff, use the measured-area mode. This avoids applying a pitch factor twice.
The calculator then converts that area into roofing squares, applies waste and estimates package quantities.
Overhangs and eaves
Roof area is normally larger than wall-to-wall building dimensions because roof surfaces often extend beyond exterior walls. If you use footprint mode, the length and width should represent the horizontal roof projection to the drip edges, not merely the interior floor area.
If overhang dimensions are known, add them to the relevant building dimensions before calculating.
Ridge and hip caps
Ridge and hip shingles may be packaged separately from field shingles, and coverage is often stated in linear feet per bundle rather than square feet. This calculator does not invent a universal ridge-cap quantity because product coverage varies materially.
Measure total ridge and hip length and use the actual product's stated linear coverage for a final order.
Starter shingles
Starter-strip products are also usually specified by linear coverage, not roofing squares. Perimeter length, eaves, rakes and manufacturer installation requirements determine the amount needed.
The waste allowance can provide a broad planning buffer, but it should not replace a product-specific starter calculation.
Underlayment
Underlayment coverage varies by roll dimensions, required laps, roof slope and product type. Rather than assuming every roll covers a fixed number of roofing squares, SonoCalculator lets you optionally enter actual usable coverage per roll.

Square feet vs roofing squares
Square feet are ordinary area units. Roofing squares are simply groups of 100 ft². Therefore:

Roof area in square metres
One square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metre. The calculator therefore also reports metric area:

The pitch angle can be calculated from rise and run:
Angle = arctan(Rise ÷ 12)Angle is useful for understanding steepness, but roofing products and building requirements are often written directly in rise-over-run pitch notation.
Low-slope roofs
A low-slope roof should not automatically be treated like a steep-slope asphalt-shingle roof. Roofing systems have minimum-slope requirements and different installation methods. The calculator can estimate geometric area at low pitch, but it does not determine which covering is appropriate.
Always follow the roofing-product manufacturer and applicable building requirements for minimum slope and underlayment details.
Roofing area vs floor area
Floor area is not necessarily the same as roof footprint. Garages, porches, overhangs, additions and different roof sections can make roof projection larger or differently shaped than interior living area.
Use roof-specific dimensions rather than assuming a home's advertised square footage equals the roof footprint.
How valleys affect waste
Valleys create diagonal cuts and can increase offcuts. Complex roofs with multiple intersecting sections generally need more careful layout and a larger allowance than a plain rectangle.
This is one reason a user-adjustable waste field is better than a single fixed percentage.
Dormers, skylights and penetrations
Small openings are not always worth subtracting from roofing area because surrounding cuts may offset the material saved. Large openings can be subtracted when you have an accurate takeoff, but the correct purchasing quantity still depends on layout and product packaging.
Roof tear-off estimates
Existing roofing removal is often priced by roofing square, but tear-off cost depends on number of layers, material type, roof access, pitch, disposal fees and local labor.
This calculator estimates area and new material quantities. It is not a complete tear-off labor estimator.
Common roofing-estimate mistakes
- Using floor area as roof area. Roof projection and interior living area are not the same.
- Ignoring pitch. Steeper roofs have more surface than their footprints.
- Doubling a full-footprint gable calculation. The pitch multiplier applied to the whole footprint already accounts for both sides.
- Applying pitch twice. Do not use a slope factor on dimensions already measured along the roof plane.
- Assuming three bundles per square for every product. Verify packaging.
- Rounding bundles down. Whole packages normally require rounding up.
- Using one waste percentage for every roof. Complexity changes cutting loss.
- Ignoring overhangs. Roof edges can extend beyond wall dimensions.
- Assuming underlayment roll coverage is universal. Check usable product coverage.
- Treating the estimate as a structural or code decision. Area math does not determine deck capacity, fastening, ventilation or code compliance.

Does the calculator include overhangs automatically?
No. Your dimensions must include the roof projection to the edges you want covered.
Does it calculate labor?
No. Optional cost is material-only based on price per roofing square.
Can I use it for metal roofing?
You can use it for geometric roof area, but metal panel quantity depends on panel width, lap, run length and layout, so bundle outputs are specifically aimed at shingle-style packaging.
Can I use it for flat roofs?
Yes for area geometry, but roofing-system suitability and minimum-slope requirements must be checked separately.
