Rectangle area = length × width. Each length is converted to feet first, then area is calculated in square feet. Other shapes use their standard geometric area formulas.

What is square footage?

Square footage is a measure of two-dimensional area expressed in square feet (ft²). It is commonly used for rooms, floors, walls, patios, decks, yards, countertops, roofing sections, concrete pads and many other building or DIY surfaces.

A square foot is the area of a square that measures 1 foot by 1 foot. Because area is two-dimensional, linear dimensions must be combined according to the shape's geometry. A room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide is 120 square feet, not 22 feet.

Basic square footage formula

For a rectangle, the formula is:

Area = Length × Width

If both dimensions are measured in feet, the answer is automatically in square feet. A 14 ft × 11 ft room has:

14 × 11 = 154 ft²

This is the most common square-footage calculation, but real projects may include circles, triangles, trapezoids, L-shaped spaces or several separate sections. This calculator supports those cases directly.

Why unit conversion must happen before area calculation

Length units and area units scale differently. One foot equals 12 inches, but one square foot equals 144 square inches because both dimensions are multiplied by 12.

1 ft² = 12 in × 12 in = 144 in²

The calculator converts each entered dimension into feet first and then applies the shape formula. This also allows mixed-unit dimensions, such as a length entered in metres and a width entered in feet, without forcing you to convert them manually.

Square feet to square metres

The international foot is defined exactly as 0.3048 metre. Squaring that conversion gives an exact square-foot relationship:

1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²

To convert square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.09290304. To convert square metres to square feet, divide by 0.09290304, which is approximately the same as multiplying by 10.7639.

Square feet to square yards

One yard contains 3 feet, so one square yard contains 3 × 3 = 9 square feet.

1 yd² = 9 ft²

This conversion is useful for carpet and other materials sometimes sold by the square yard.

Square feet to acres

One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. Therefore:

Acres = Square feet ÷ 43,560

Acres are usually more useful for lots, fields and land than for ordinary interior rooms.

Rectangle and room area

For rectangular rooms, floors, walls and slabs, multiply length by width. Measure the actual edges of the surface you want included rather than estimating from furniture placement or visual open space.

If a room has an alcove, bay, recess or bump-out, it is usually more accurate to split the room into simpler sections, calculate each section and add them. The Multiple rectangular sections mode is designed for that workflow.

Square area

A square is a rectangle with equal sides, so the area is the side length multiplied by itself:

Square area = Side²

A square measuring 9 ft on each side has an area of 81 ft².

Triangle square footage

For a triangle, use the base and the perpendicular height:

Triangle area = ½ × Base × Perpendicular Height

The height is not automatically the length of a sloped side. It must be measured at a right angle from the chosen base to the opposite vertex. A triangle with a 12 ft base and 8 ft perpendicular height has an area of 48 ft².

Circle square footage

For a circle:

Circle area = π × Radius²

The radius is half the diameter. If a round patio has a diameter of 14 ft, the radius is 7 ft and its area is approximately π × 49 = 153.94 ft².

This calculator lets you choose whether the circular measurement you have is the radius or diameter so you do not need to divide manually.

Trapezoid square footage

A trapezoid has two parallel sides. If their lengths are a and b and the perpendicular distance between them is h:

Trapezoid area = ½ × (a + b) × h

The height must be perpendicular to the parallel sides. A slanted edge is not the height unless it happens to meet the bases at a right angle.

L-shaped room square footage

An L-shaped room can be calculated reliably by splitting it into two non-overlapping rectangles and adding them:

L-shape area = Rectangle 1 area + Rectangle 2 area

This calculator asks for the length and width of each rectangle rather than making assumptions about where the missing corner is located. That makes the method transparent and works for many common L-shaped floor plans.

Multiple rooms and irregular spaces

Irregular rooms are often easier to measure as a collection of rectangles. Sketch the space, draw imaginary lines that divide it into simple sections, then measure each section separately.

In Multiple rectangular sections mode, you can add as many sections as needed. Each section can be marked Add or Subtract. Subtraction is useful for rectangular openings, excluded islands, shafts or other areas that should not be part of the final measured surface.

Do not subtract an object simply because it sits on top of a floor if the flooring or other material will still continue underneath it. Whether an area should be excluded depends on what you are measuring for.

Worked multi-room example

Suppose a project contains a 12 × 14 ft living room, a 10 × 11 ft bedroom and an 8 × 6 ft hallway section:

The project total is 326 ft² before any material overage is added.

Feet and inches

If a dimension contains both feet and inches, convert the inches to a fraction of a foot before entering the value in feet:

Decimal feet = Feet + Inches ÷ 12

For example, 12 ft 6 in = 12 + 6 ÷ 12 = 12.5 ft. Alternatively, enter the entire measurement in inches and select inches as the unit. The calculator's flexible unit selectors are designed to avoid unnecessary manual conversion.

Why mixed-unit support matters

Real measurements do not always arrive in one unit. A product specification might be in millimetres, a room measurement in feet and an architectural drawing in metres. Manually converting every number increases the chance of an error.

Each single-shape dimension in this calculator has its own unit selector. The value is normalized internally to feet before the area formula is applied.

Material overage and waste allowance

Many material projects require more material than the exact measured area because cuts, breakage, matching, layout direction and unusable offcuts can create waste. The optional overage field applies a percentage on top of the measured area:

Order area = Measured area × (1 + Overage % ÷ 100)

There is no universal waste percentage for every material or layout. A simple straight installation may require less extra material than a diagonal, herringbone or highly cut-up layout. Treat any percentage as a planning assumption and follow the product manufacturer or installer when a specific allowance is recommended.

Square footage vs flooring quantity

Square footage tells you the area. Flooring products are often sold by the box or carton, so the final purchase quantity may need to be rounded up to complete packages.

If one box covers 22.5 ft² and your order area is 235 ft², divide 235 by 22.5 and round up to the next whole box. This calculator focuses on area and optional cost rather than replacing the dedicated Flooring Calculator already available on SonoCalculator.

Wall square footage

For a rectangular wall, use wall width × wall height. Calculate each wall separately and add the results. Doors and windows can then be subtracted if your project requires net wall area.

For paint, some people prefer to leave small openings in the estimate rather than subtract every door or window because extra paint is often useful. For tile, drywall or expensive wall panels, measuring openings more carefully may matter more.

Floor square footage

Measure wall to wall for the floor surface that will actually receive the material. Divide irregular rooms into simple shapes rather than multiplying one approximate maximum length by one approximate maximum width, which can overstate area.

Closets, alcoves and connected sections should be included if they receive the same flooring. Permanent areas that will never be covered may be excluded if the installation plan truly does not require material there.

Ceiling square footage

A flat rectangular ceiling usually has the same plan area as the floor below it: length × width. Sloped or vaulted ceilings have larger surface areas than their horizontal floor footprint, so use the actual sloped dimensions when estimating finish material for those surfaces.

Roof and sloped-surface caution

A building footprint is not the same as roof surface area when the roof is pitched. Square footage from plan-view length × width measures horizontal projection, while roofing material follows the sloped surface.

For roofs, use a roofing-specific method that includes pitch, overhangs, valleys and roof sections rather than treating building footprint as final roofing area.

Lot and land area

A simple rectangular lot can be calculated with length × width. Real property boundaries are often irregular, surveyed using bearings and distances, or affected by easements and legal descriptions. A tape-measure square-footage estimate should not be treated as a legal survey.

For land, the acre conversion is often useful: 43,560 ft² = 1 acre.

Gross area vs net usable area

“Square footage” can mean different things depending on context. Gross floor area, usable floor area, rentable area, finished living area and material coverage can all include or exclude different spaces.

This calculator performs geometry only. It does not decide whether garages, stairs, wall thickness, balconies, unfinished rooms, low-ceiling areas or common areas count under a real-estate, appraisal, lease or building-code definition.

Real-estate square footage

A homeowner's tape-measure estimate may differ from a listing, appraisal, tax record or architectural plan because those sources may use different measurement standards and inclusion rules. Exterior-wall measurements can also produce a different area from interior clear dimensions.

Use the calculator for geometric planning. When square footage is part of a property sale, lease, valuation, permit or legal document, use the measurement standard required for that purpose.

Accuracy and measurement precision

Your result cannot be more reliable than the measurements entered. A small error in both length and width can compound in the area. For material orders, measure more than once and avoid rounding dimensions down prematurely.

For ordinary room projects, recording measurements to the nearest inch is often more useful than guessing tenths of a foot. For fabrication or high-cost finishes, use the precision required by the actual project.

Why area units are squared

A linear foot measures one-dimensional length. A square foot measures two-dimensional area. A cubic foot measures three-dimensional volume. These are fundamentally different quantities.

This means 10 linear feet cannot be converted to square feet without another dimension. If material is sold by linear foot, you need its fixed width or coverage rule before converting area into length.

Square feet vs linear feet

Square feet measure area; linear feet measure length. Baseboard, trim, fencing and some lumber are commonly measured linearly. Flooring, tile, carpet and wall panels are generally area-based.

For a rectangular room, perimeter is 2 × (length + width), while floor area is length × width. Do not use one as a substitute for the other.

Square feet vs cubic feet

Cubic feet measure volume. To calculate the volume of a rectangular space, multiply area by height:

Volume = Length × Width × Height

A 120 ft² room with an 8 ft ceiling contains 960 ft³ of geometric volume. Heating, cooling and storage calculations may need volume rather than floor area alone.
