For a rectangular room, wall area comes from the room perimeter multiplied by wall height. Ceiling area is length multiplied by width.
Doors and windows are deducted from wall area only. If you choose ceiling only, the openings input is ignored because normal wall openings do not reduce ceiling area.
How to Calculate Paint for Walls
For four rectangular walls, calculate the room perimeter and multiply by height. A 5 m × 4 m room has a perimeter of 18 m. If the walls are 2.5 m high, gross wall area is 18 × 2.5 = 45 m².
If doors and windows total 4 m², net wall area becomes 41 m². With two coats, the paint must cover 82 m² in total before any extra allowance.
How to Calculate Paint for a Ceiling
For a flat rectangular ceiling, multiply room length by room width. A 5 m × 4 m ceiling has an area of 20 m². If you apply two coats, the paint needs to cover 40 m².
Vaulted, sloped, coffered or unusually shaped ceilings can have more surface area than the floor footprint. For those spaces, divide the ceiling into measurable sections or use the actual surface dimensions rather than assuming a flat rectangle.
Should You Subtract Doors and Windows?
Subtracting openings can improve the geometric estimate, especially when a room has large windows, sliding doors or other unpainted areas. However, small openings may be offset by extra paint used around edges, trim lines and application losses.
Rather than assuming every door or window has a standard size, this calculator accepts the combined opening area. This makes it usable across different countries, building styles and opening dimensions.
Paint Coverage Rate Matters
Coverage tells you how much surface area a given volume of paint can cover for one coat. It is commonly expressed as square meters per liter or square feet per gallon.
Coverage is not identical for every paint. Product formulation, substrate, porosity, texture, application thickness and application method all influence real consumption. For this reason, SonoCalculator does not force a fixed “one gallon covers X square feet” rule. Enter the coverage stated for the actual product you plan to use.
How Many Coats of Paint?
The correct number of coats depends on the paint system and the surface. Some projects may achieve acceptable coverage with one finish coat over a suitable existing surface, while other projects need two or more coats. Strong color changes, repairs, porous surfaces and some specialty finishes can require additional work.
The calculator therefore leaves coat count entirely user-controlled. If you enter two coats, it doubles the paintable area used in the paint-volume calculation.
How Much Extra Paint Should You Buy?
There is no universal extra percentage that is correct for every job. Extra paint can be useful for application losses, surface variation, future touch-ups or small measurement differences. Large, simple walls may behave differently from rooms with many corners, niches and detailed edges.
Use the optional extra allowance when appropriate for your project. The percentage directly affects the final quantity rather than serving as display-only information.

How Many Paint Cans or Containers Do I Need?
If you enter a container size, the calculator divides the final paint estimate by that size and rounds upward to a whole container.
Container sizes differ between products and countries. Metric paint may be sold in various liter sizes, while US products may use gallons, quarts or other package sizes. The calculator avoids forcing a package size and lets you enter the one actually available to you.
Does the Paint Calculator Include Primer?
No. Primer is intentionally not merged into the finish-paint quantity because primer and finish paint can have different coverage rates, coat requirements and product specifications.
If primer is required, calculate it separately using the primer's own coverage rate and number of coats. This avoids assuming that one liter or gallon of primer covers exactly the same area as the finish paint.
Painting Multiple Rooms
For multiple rooms with different dimensions, calculate each room separately and add the paint quantities. This is more accurate than multiplying one room by the number of rooms unless every room has identical dimensions, openings and painted surfaces.
If several rooms use the same paint, combining their calculated coated areas before dividing by the same product coverage can also produce a useful project total.
Irregular and Feature Walls
For an L-shaped room, alcove, stairwell or irregular wall layout, divide the surfaces into simple rectangles. Calculate each rectangle's area and add them. If only one feature wall is being painted, measure that wall directly instead of using the full-room perimeter formula.
How Surface Texture Changes Paint Use
Rough or porous surfaces can consume more coating than smooth, sealed surfaces. Fresh plaster, drywall, masonry, brick, block, textured finishes and unfinished timber can behave differently. Manufacturer coverage information may specify assumptions about surface condition.

Common Paint Estimating Mistakes
Forgetting the second coat
Surface area may be correct but paint quantity will be understated if the project needs two coats and only one is calculated.
Using floor area as wall area
A room's floor area is not its wall area. Wall area depends on perimeter and wall height.
Using a generic coverage number
Different paints and surfaces can have different coverage. Use the product's own stated coverage whenever possible.
Subtracting openings twice
Enter the combined door and window area once. Do not reduce room dimensions and also enter the same opening area.
Mixing metric and US units
