What is a board foot?
A board foot is a lumber-volume unit equal to 144 cubic inches. One board foot can be pictured as a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long. Unlike a linear foot, board feet account for thickness, width and length, which makes the unit useful for comparing and pricing lumber of different sizes.
Board footage is especially common with hardwood, rough-sawn lumber and random-width stock. The exact dimensions a seller uses for billing can depend on how the lumber is sold and surfaced, so this calculator deliberately lets you choose the measurement basis instead of silently assuming nominal or finished dimensions.
Board foot formula
When thickness and width are in inches and length is in feet:
Board Feet = Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft) ÷ 12If all three dimensions are in inches, the equivalent formula is:

Worked example
A board measuring 1 inch thick, 8 inches wide and 10 feet long contains:

Why board feet measure volume, not area
Square feet measure two-dimensional surface area. Board feet measure three-dimensional lumber volume. Two boards can cover the same surface area but contain different amounts of wood if their thicknesses differ.
For example, a 1-inch-thick board and a 2-inch-thick board with the same width and length have the same face area, but the thicker board contains twice the board footage.
Board feet vs linear feet
A linear foot measures length only. It tells you nothing about the board's width or thickness. Board feet incorporate all three dimensions.
A 1 × 4 and a 1 × 12 can each be 8 linear feet long, but the 1 × 12 contains three times the nominal board-foot volume of the 1 × 4.
Board feet vs square feet
Square footage is appropriate for surfaces such as flooring, walls and sheet goods. Board footage is appropriate when lumber volume matters. You cannot convert square feet to board feet without knowing thickness.

Nominal dimensions vs actual dimensions
One of the most important board-foot decisions is which dimensions belong in the formula. A dimensional-lumber label such as 2 × 4 is a nominal size; the surfaced board itself is normally smaller. Hardwood and rough lumber can follow different tally and surfacing practices.
There is no safe universal rule that every board-foot transaction should always use nominal dimensions or always use finished measured dimensions. For purchasing, use the dimensions or tally basis specified by the lumber dealer. For physical finished-wood volume, use actual measured dimensions.
The calculator therefore offers three explicit bases: custom/rough dimensions, nominal dimensional-lumber sizes, and actual measured dimensions.
Why SonoCalculator does not silently convert a 2×4
Some calculators automatically interpret “2 × 4” as nominal dimensions, while others substitute finished dimensions. That can produce very different answers. This tool labels the basis clearly so you can match the calculation to the purpose.
If a supplier quotes a price per board foot, confirm whether the tally is based on rough dimensions, nominal dimensions, surfaced dimensions or another documented rule. The supplier's billing convention controls the purchase calculation.
Hardwood quarter thickness: 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4
Hardwood thickness is commonly described in quarters of an inch. The rough nominal relationship is:

Surfacing removes material, so a finished 4/4 board may be thinner than one inch. When buying hardwood, the quarter designation may still be part of the seller's tally convention. Confirm the dealer's practice instead of assuming the finished thickness is the billing thickness.
Random-width hardwood
Hardwood boards often come in random widths and lengths rather than standardized finished sizes. That is one reason board feet are useful: every board can be reduced to a common volume unit.
Use the Lumber tally mode when your order contains boards of different widths, lengths or thicknesses. Each row calculates independently and the calculator adds the board footage into one total.
Lumber tally mode
A tally is a list of lumber pieces or groups of identical pieces. For each row:
Row BF = Thickness × Width × Length × Quantity ÷ 12The total order is the sum of all rows. This is more reliable than averaging widths or lengths when a random-width order contains substantial variation.
Mixed measurement units
Measurements may arrive in inches, feet, millimetres, centimetres or metres. SonoCalculator converts each dimension to the internal units required by the formula before calculating board footage.
This is particularly useful when plans are metric but lumber-yard dimensions are imperial. The result remains in board feet because board foot itself is an imperial lumber-volume unit.
Metric conversion
One board foot is 144 cubic inches. Using the international inch definition, that equals approximately:

Cubic feet conversion
One cubic foot contains 1,728 cubic inches. Since one board foot contains 144 cubic inches:

Board feet per piece
The per-piece result is useful when every board in a group has the same dimensions. It helps you check a lumber-yard tally and compare one size against another before multiplying by quantity.
In mixed tally mode, the calculator instead shows the average board feet per counted piece as an additional planning value, while the main result remains the total board footage.
Quantity and identical boards
Quantity should represent the number of pieces with the entered dimensions. If five boards are all 1 × 8 × 10 ft, calculate one piece and multiply by five. If their widths or lengths differ, use separate tally rows instead.
Averaging dimensions can sometimes reproduce the same total mathematically, but separate rows are easier to audit and less likely to hide entry mistakes.
Waste and purchasing allowance
Woodworking projects can require extra lumber for defects, grain selection, color matching, cutting, joinery, milling loss and mistakes. The optional allowance adds a percentage to the measured board-foot total:
Planned Board Feet = Measured BF × (1 + Allowance % ÷ 100)There is no universally correct waste percentage. Clear furniture parts, highly selective grain matching and rough stock may need a different allowance from simple utility work. Use project experience, supplier guidance and the quality of the stock rather than treating a default percentage as a rule.
Price per board foot
If lumber is quoted at a price per board foot:

Why price per board foot is useful
Price per board foot lets differently sized boards be compared on a volume basis. A wide board costs more than a narrow board of the same thickness and length because it contains more wood.
However, equal board-foot prices do not mean two boards are equally valuable for a project. Species, grade, figure, color, moisture, defects, width, length and usable yield can all affect practical value.
Board footage and usable yield
Board footage measures gross lumber volume. It does not tell you how much defect-free finished material you will obtain after jointing, planing, ripping, crosscutting and defect removal.
A 10 BF rough board with checks, knots, wane or twist may yield much less than 10 BF of usable finished parts. Purchasing allowance should account for the quality and intended cuts when yield matters.
Surfacing and milling loss
S2S, S3S and S4S surfacing can reduce thickness and width. If you are estimating the physical volume of a finished board, enter its actual dimensions. If you are checking a supplier invoice, use the supplier's stated tally basis.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: comparing a rough-lumber billing volume directly with the smaller physical volume after milling and assuming one of them must be mathematically wrong.
Board foot vs Doyle, Scribner and International log scales
A board foot calculated from already-sawn lumber dimensions is not the same thing as a log-scale estimate. Log rules such as Doyle, Scribner and International estimate how much sawn lumber might be recovered from a log and incorporate assumptions about saw kerf and geometry.
This calculator is for sawn lumber dimensions. Do not use it as a log-scaling calculator.
Board foot vs MBF
In lumber markets, MBF commonly means one thousand board feet:

Board feet and structural design
Board footage measures quantity, not structural capacity. Two pieces with the same board-foot volume can have completely different cross-sections and therefore very different bending, buckling and load behavior.
Do not use board-foot equivalence to substitute one structural member for another. Structural design depends on dimensions, species, grade, span, loading, connections and applicable building rules.
Board feet for framing lumber
Framing lumber is often purchased by piece or linear length rather than by board foot. You can still calculate its nominal or actual board-foot volume for comparison, inventory or estimating, but that does not mean the retailer prices it that way.
Use the nominal preset mode when you intentionally want nominal labeled dimensions. Use actual measured mode when you want the physical volume of the surfaced piece.
Board feet for woodworking
Board-foot calculations are particularly useful for furniture, cabinetry, turning blanks and other hardwood projects. Start with a cut list, estimate the required rough volume, then consider yield and selection allowance.
For projects with many random-width boards, tallying each board gives a more transparent purchasing estimate than trying to force the stock into standardized dimensions.
Board feet for slabs
Live-edge slabs may have varying width along their length. A single width measurement can overstate or understate the volume. Sellers may use an average width, multiple width measurements or another tally method.
If the slab is irregular, follow the seller's measurement convention or divide it into representative sections. This calculator assumes each entered board or tally row has one thickness, one width and one length.
Fractions and decimal inches
Woodworking measurements are often expressed as fractions. Convert a fraction to a decimal before entering it if your browser's number field does not accept fractional notation. For example:

Common board-foot mistakes
- Dividing by 144 when length is already in feet. With thickness and width in inches and length in feet, divide by 12.
- Dividing by 12 when all dimensions are in inches. With all dimensions in inches, divide by 144.
- Confusing board feet with square feet. Board feet measure volume and require thickness.
- Using linear feet as though width and thickness do not matter. Linear length alone cannot determine board footage.
- Assuming nominal and actual dimensions are interchangeable. Choose the basis that matches the purpose or supplier tally.
- Assuming surfaced hardwood thickness equals its quarter designation. Milling removes material.
- Using one average width for highly variable stock without checking the tally. Separate rows are easier to verify.
- Forgetting quantity. Per-piece BF must be multiplied by the number of identical pieces.
- Applying a universal waste percentage. Yield depends on stock quality and project requirements.
- Using board feet to judge structural capacity. Volume is not a structural design metric.
- Using a sawn-lumber formula to scale logs. Log rules are different estimation systems.
