How to Solve a Missing Value in a Ratio

A proportion says that two ratios are equal:

A : B = C : D A/B = C/D A × D = B × C

The last relationship is called cross multiplication. If one value is missing, rearrange the equation to solve for it.

D = (B × C) ÷ A

If C is missing

C = (A × D) ÷ B

If B is missing

Do Ratios Have Units?

A pure ratio usually compares quantities measured in the same units. If one length is 2 metres and another is 3 metres, the ratio 2:3 is unitless after the common unit cancels.

If the quantities use different units, convert them to comparable units first when you want a pure ratio. For example, comparing 1 metre with 50 centimetres directly as 1:50 is misleading because the units differ. Convert 1 metre to 100 centimetres first, giving 100:50 = 2:1.
