How to Calculate Percentage Increase

A percentage increase occurs when the new value is greater than the original value. Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the magnitude of the original value, and multiply by 100.

How to Calculate Percentage Decrease

A percentage decrease occurs when the new value is lower than the original value. The same general percentage-change formula works; the subtraction naturally produces a negative result.

Example: 200 → 150 (150 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = −25% Result: 25% decrease

Some textbooks present percentage decrease as a positive magnitude by writing (original − new) ÷ original × 100. Percentage Change With Negative Values

Negative starting values require more care than ordinary positive-value examples. Suppose a temperature-like measurement moves from −20 to −10. Numerically, that is an increase of 10. Dividing the change by the magnitude of the original value gives 10 ÷ 20 × 100 = +50%.

If the same measurement moves from −10 to −20, the numerical change is −10. Relative to the magnitude of the original value, the result is −100%. This signed approach keeps “increase” and “decrease” aligned with the numerical direction of movement.

Context matters with negative quantities. In some fields, percentages involving negative baselines may be difficult to interpret or may not be the preferred reporting method. What If the Original Value Is Zero?

If the original value is zero, the standard percentage-change formula is undefined. For example, a move from 0 to 10 has an absolute increase of 10, but it does not have a finite ordinary percentage increase because the formula would require division by zero.

You may sometimes see people describe a move from zero as a “100% increase,” but that is mathematically incorrect under the standard percentage-change definition. A 100% increase means the original value doubled: 10 to 20, 50 to 100, or 200 to 400. Zero multiplied by two is still zero.

Why a Percentage Increase and Equal Percentage Decrease Do Not Cancel Out

A common mistake is assuming that increasing a value by 20% and then decreasing the result by 20% returns to the starting value. It does not, because the second percentage is applied to a different baseline.

To exactly reverse a percentage increase, you need a different percentage decrease. For example, reversing a 25% increase requires a 20% decrease from the increased value because 1.25 × 0.80 = 1.

What Is the Change Factor?

The change factor is the new value divided by the original value when the original is nonzero. A factor of 1 means the value is unchanged. A factor of 1.25 means the new value is 1.25 times the original, corresponding to a 25% increase for a positive baseline. A factor of 0.8 means the new value is 80% of the original, corresponding to a 20% decrease for a positive baseline.

The factor can be useful when you need to apply the same proportional change elsewhere. However, negative starting or ending values can make a factor less intuitive, so always interpret it in context.

Percentage Change Greater Than 100%
