The number 324 comes from the unit conversions: one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and one foot is 12 inches, so 27 × 12 = 324. At a 3-inch layer, one cubic yard covers 108 square feet because 324 ÷ 3 = 108.

How Deep Should Mulch Be?

Depth is not merely a calculator setting; it affects soil moisture, weed suppression, root-zone conditions and plant health. Iowa State University Extension states that the optimal depth depends on soil texture, climate, mulch type, plant age and management goals, while giving a general range of about 2 to 4 inches and noting that coarse mulches tend toward the higher end and finer materials toward the lower end.

How to Measure Different Mulch Bed Shapes

Rectangle or square

Area = Length × Width

A 20 ft × 10 ft bed contains 200 ft². At 3 inches deep, the raw mulch volume is 200 × 3 ÷ 324 = 1.85 yd³.

Circle

Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²

A circular bed with a 10-foot diameter has an area of about 78.54 ft². Current mulch calculators commonly support this same circle formula.

Circular ring or tree bed

Ring Area = π × (Outer Radius² − Inner Radius²)

This is useful when the center must remain clear—for example, a circular mulch bed around a tree. It avoids paying for mulch that the geometry says belongs in an intentionally unmulched center.

Irregular garden bed

Divide an irregular bed into simpler rectangles, circles or approximate sections, calculate each area and add them. If you already know the combined surface area, select Known Area and enter it directly.

How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need?

Bagged mulch is sold by volume. In US stores, bags are often labelled in cubic feet; elsewhere, bags commonly use litres. The calculator therefore does not force a 2 ft³ bag or any other package size.

Whole Bags Needed = ceil(Total Mulch Volume ÷ Bag Volume)

A 2 ft³ bag spread 3 inches deep theoretically covers 8 ft². A 3 ft³ bag at the same depth covers 12 ft². Current coverage references show these same relationships.

Always round bag quantity upward. If the calculation says 12.1 bags, 12 bags do not contain enough volume; the purchasing quantity is 13 whole bags.

How Many Bags Are in a Cubic Yard?

One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet. Therefore:

Adding Mulch to an Existing Bed

If an existing bed already has usable mulch, calculating a completely new 3-inch layer can substantially overestimate the material needed. Instead, determine the existing effective depth and calculate only the top-up needed to reach the target.

Depth to Add = Target Finished Depth − Existing Effective Depth

For example, if a bed has about 1.5 inches remaining and the intended finished depth is 3 inches, enter 1.5 inches as the depth to add. Current mulch guidance also recommends subtracting existing depth when topping up a bed.

Mulch Around Trees: Avoid the Mulch Volcano

Tree rings need special care. Colorado State University Extension warns against piling mulch against the trunk and describes the familiar “mulch volcano” as harmful because wet material against bark can cause problems and excessive depth interferes with healthy conditions. Its guidance says to keep mulch back from the trunk rather than mounding it against the base.

Organic vs Inorganic Mulch

“Mulch” describes a function rather than one single material. Organic mulches include wood chips, shredded bark, leaves, straw and other plant-derived materials. Inorganic surface materials can include gravel or certain synthetic products. Their appropriate depth, longevity, density and horticultural effects differ.

This calculator is volume-based, so it does not estimate weight. Weight can vary dramatically with material type, particle size and moisture content. If a supplier sells by weight rather than volume, use the supplier's verified density or conversion rather than assuming all mulch weighs the same.

Wood Chips, Bark and Shredded Mulch

Coarse wood chips can behave differently from fine shredded mulch in settling and recommended application depth. Iowa State specifically notes that coarser mulches such as wood chips can be used toward the higher end of its general depth range, while finer mulches may be used more shallowly.

For quantity calculation, however, one cubic yard remains one cubic yard. Material type changes practical application and weight, not the geometric definition of volume.

Mulch for Weed Suppression

Adequate mulch can reduce weed emergence, but depth recommendations vary with material and site conditions. Should You Add Extra Mulch for Waste or Settling?

Mulch Coverage Quick Reference

Therefore, doubling the depth halves the coverage. One yard covers 162 ft² at 2 inches but only 81 ft² at 4 inches.

Multiple Garden Beds

If several beds have identical dimensions and depth, use Number of Equal Areas. If they differ, calculate each surface area separately, add those areas, and use Known Area for the combined total when the same depth applies. If depths differ, calculate the volumes separately and add the final volumes.

Sloped and Uneven Beds

A simple plan-area measurement does not capture every contour of a steep or irregular surface. For ordinary gently sloped landscape beds, a measured plan area is often sufficient for planning, but highly uneven terrain can require field measurement and a project-specific allowance.

Why Mulch Volume and Mulch Weight Are Different

Bulk mulch is often planned by volume, but vehicle payload is a weight limit. Wet mulch can weigh substantially more than dry mulch, and different materials have different densities. Do not use a generic cubic-yard volume result to decide whether a vehicle can safely carry a load. Ask the supplier for current material weight and follow the vehicle's payload rating.

1. Forgetting to convert inches to feet
