Straight Lay vs Diagonal vs Herringbone

Should Closets Be Included?

Include any closet or storage area that will receive the same flooring. Measure it separately if it falls outside the main room rectangle. Do not include it merely because it is attached; include it because flooring will actually be installed there.

Should Kitchen Cabinets Be Deducted?

This depends on the flooring system and installation plan. Some floors are installed before fixed cabinetry, while certain floating floors may have manufacturer requirements about fixed cabinets or islands. Flooring Price per Square Foot vs Price per Box

If you only know price per square foot, multiply it by the actual purchased coverage after box rounding for a rough material estimate, but confirm how the retailer invoices partial or whole cartons.

Worked Flooring Examples

Example 1: 14 ft × 12 ft room

A rectangular room is 14 ft long and 12 ft wide. The measured area is 168 ft². With a user-selected 10% overage:

Measured Area vs Flooring to Order vs Purchased Coverage

These three figures are intentionally different. Measured area is the physical floor. Flooring to order is measured area plus your chosen overage. Purchased coverage is the area contained in the whole cartons you actually buy. Box rounding can make purchased coverage higher than the waste-adjusted requirement.

Why You May Have Flooring Left Over

Leftover flooring does not necessarily mean the estimate was wrong. Whole-box rounding can create surplus, and the waste allowance intentionally anticipates cuts, unusable offcuts, defects and potential repair stock.
