Calorie Deficit Formula

The calculator first estimates BMR with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation:

Male BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5

Female BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

Then it estimates maintenance calories:

Estimated maintenance calories = BMR × activity factor

Finally:

Daily calorie target = estimated maintenance calories − applied daily deficit

BMR is the estimated energy required for basic body functions at rest. Maintenance calories, often called estimated total daily energy expenditure or TDEE, add an activity adjustment. Neither value is a direct measurement of your metabolism.

How Large Should a Calorie Deficit Be?

There is no single deficit that is ideal for every adult. A deficit that is manageable for one person may be too aggressive for another. Your maintenance needs, body size, activity, health, medications, food preferences and training demands all matter.

Public-health guidance commonly favors gradual, sustainable weight loss rather than rapid loss. A larger mathematical deficit is therefore not automatically a better plan. This calculator lets you test different deficit sizes instead of hiding that choice inside the formula.

What Does BMR Mean?

BMR is an estimate of the energy your body needs for essential functions such as circulation, breathing and cellular activity. It is not the same as the calories you should eat each day because normal life includes movement, digestion and exercise.

The Mifflin–St Jeor equation is widely used as a practical predictive equation for resting energy needs in adults. Like all predictive equations, it can be wrong for a particular person.

What Are Maintenance Calories?

Maintenance calories are an estimate of the energy intake that would roughly match your current energy expenditure at your selected activity level. If intake and expenditure were truly equal over time, body weight would tend to be more stable, but real-world intake and expenditure fluctuate.

Someone with a desk job and a few workouts per week may have a very different total energy expenditure from someone with physically demanding work, even if their body measurements are similar.

Why This Calculator Does Not Predict Exact Pounds or Kilograms Lost

Simple calorie rules often imply that a fixed calorie deficit produces a perfectly predictable amount of weight loss. Human weight change is more complicated. Energy requirements can change as body weight changes, and shifts in water, glycogen, sodium, food volume and activity can affect scale weight independently of body fat.

Calorie Deficit Examples

Example 1: 2,400 kcal maintenance with a 400 kcal deficit

If estimated maintenance is 2,400 kcal/day and you select a 400 kcal/day deficit, the estimated target is 2,000 kcal/day.

Example 2: 2,050 kcal maintenance with a 250 kcal deficit

The estimated target would be 1,800 kcal/day. A smaller deficit may be easier for some adults to sustain, but the appropriate approach is individual.

Example 3: Low arithmetic target

If maintenance is estimated at 1,550 kcal/day and a 500 kcal deficit is entered, simple subtraction gives 1,050 kcal/day. This calculator instead applies its 1,200 kcal/day general-adult guardrail and warns that professional guidance may be appropriate.

Example 4: Different activity assumptions
