Walking Calories Burned Formula

The energy estimate uses a standard MET-based relationship. A MET, or metabolic equivalent, expresses the energy cost of an activity relative to rest. The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities provides MET values for walking at different speeds and under different conditions.

The calculator converts pounds to kilograms internally when US units are selected. It also converts miles and mph to metric internally for the MET calculation, then returns the visible results in the measurement system you chose.

What Does MET Mean?

MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task. The Compendium defines one MET as a standardized resting reference and lists MET values for many physical activities. Walking is not assigned one universal MET because a slow walk, a brisk walk, hill walking and walking while carrying a load do not require the same effort.

This calculator uses representative level-ground walking speed points from the Adult Compendium and interpolates between nearby values. That gives a smoother estimate than forcing every walker into only three labels such as slow, moderate and fast.

Walking Calories Burned Examples

A 70 kg adult walking for 45 minutes at about 5 km/h can enter those values directly. The calculator assigns an estimated MET from the speed and returns total calories plus distance and pace.

A person weighing 180 lb can select US / Imperial, enter walking time and mph, and receive distance in miles and pace in minutes per mile while the energy equation handles the internal conversion.

Why Body Weight Changes the Calorie Estimate

For the same standardized activity intensity and duration, moving a larger body generally requires more energy. That is why weight appears in the MET calorie formula. Weight is only one variable in this energy estimate and should not be interpreted as a complete measure of health, fitness or body composition.

Why Walking Time Matters

At the same body weight and estimated intensity, calories increase with duration. A 60-minute walk therefore produces roughly twice the estimated activity calories of a 30-minute walk under the same MET assumption. Long-term activity planning, however, should consider recovery, fitness and overall health rather than maximizing one session's calorie number.

Why Walking Speed Matters

Walking speed is used as a practical proxy for intensity. The Adult Compendium lists different energy costs across walking speeds. Faster level walking generally requires more energy per minute than slower level walking, although the same absolute speed can feel easier or harder for different individuals.

Does Walking Uphill Burn More Calories?

Usually, yes. Walking uphill increases the mechanical work required, and the 2024 Adult Compendium includes hill-walking entries with higher MET values than many level-ground walking activities. Stairs and walking while carrying loads can also have higher energy costs.

This calculator intentionally does not ask for incline because many outdoor users do not know an accurate route grade. If your session involved substantial hills, stairs, a loaded backpack, stroller pushing or another condition that raises effort, treat the level-speed estimate as a baseline rather than a precise total.

Why Your Fitness Watch or Treadmill May Show Different Calories

Consumer devices do not all use the same algorithm. A wearable may include heart rate, movement sensors, age, sex, fitness history and proprietary adjustments. A treadmill may know speed and incline but know little about your physiology. SonoCalculator deliberately uses a transparent MET-based method rather than a hidden proprietary model.

Because the methods are different, two estimates can disagree without either one representing a direct laboratory measurement. For personal comparisons, using the same method consistently can be more informative than expecting every device to show an identical calorie number.

Walking for Health: Calories Are Only One Part of the Picture

Walking can be valuable even when calorie burn is not your primary goal. Current CDC guidance states that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, and brisk walking is listed as an example. Adults are also advised to include muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week.

Using top speed instead of average speed

A short fast interval does not mean the whole walk occurred at that pace. Use an average across the active session when possible.

Including long stopped periods

If a 90-minute outing contained 30 minutes of sitting, entering all 90 minutes as active walking can overstate the estimate. Use active walking time when available.

Ignoring hills or carried weight

A speed-only level-ground model may underestimate a steep route, stair-heavy session or loaded walk.

Treating calories as exact

MET-based calculations are estimates derived from standardized activity values. They are useful for planning and comparison, not direct measurement of your personal metabolism.

How to Get a More Useful Estimate

Use a recent body weight, measured active time and a realistic average speed or route distance. If you repeat the same route regularly, using the same calculation method can make comparisons more meaningful. If route conditions change substantially, remember that the model may not capture those differences.

Accuracy and Limitations

The arithmetic is transparent and deterministic for the values entered. The uncertainty comes from estimating real human energy expenditure. The calculator does not directly measure oxygen consumption, heart rate, body composition, metabolic efficiency, gradient, wind, temperature, footwear, gait, mobility aids or load.
