Example where weighting matters

Suppose you have a 95% homework score worth 20% of the course and a 70% final exam score worth 80%. The simple average is 82.5%, but the weighted grade is only 75%:

The final exam dominates because it has four times the weight of homework.

Do Grade Weights Have to Add Up to 100?

Not mathematically. If weights are being used as relative importance, any positive scale works because the formula divides by the total entered weight. For example, weights of 2, 3 and 5 produce the same weighted average as 20, 30 and 50.

When weights should total 100

If you are copying category percentages from a syllabus, the full course structure will often total 100%. In that situation, a total other than 100 can signal that you have omitted a category or are calculating only the work completed so far.

How to Calculate Your Current Grade Before the Course Is Finished

If only part of a course has been graded, enter the completed categories and their scores. SonoCalculator divides by the weight that is actually entered, which gives a normalized current grade on the included work.

Example: 60% of the course completed

Suppose homework is worth 20% with a score of 90, quizzes are worth 10% with a score of 85, and a midterm is worth 30% with a score of 80. The entered weight totals 60.

(90×20 + 85×10 + 80×30) ÷ 60 = 84.17%

That 84.17% is your weighted average on the work entered. It is not the same as saying you have already earned 84.17 percentage points toward a 100-point final course grade. The completed categories contribute 50.5 weighted course points out of the 60 currently represented.

Important: do not automatically enter future ungraded categories as 0 unless your institution actually treats them as zero. Leaving them out gives a current normalized average; entering zeros answers a different question.

Weighted Grade When Scores Are Above 100%

Some courses permit extra credit, so this calculator does not cap scores at 100%. A score of 105% can be mathematically included in the weighted average. Whether a course actually allows scores above 100, caps category grades or applies extra credit separately depends on the instructor or institution.

Assignment Weights vs Category Weights

Schools can structure weighted grading in different ways.

Category-weighted grading

A syllabus might state Homework 20%, Quizzes 15%, Projects 25% and Exams 40%. In that case, first determine the score for each category according to the course rules, then enter the category scores and category weights.

Individually weighted assignments

Some courses give each assignment its own direct weight. In that case, enter each assignment score and its weight directly.

Equal-weight assignments inside a category

If five homework assignments count equally inside a 20% homework category, calculate the homework category average first, then use 20 as that category's weight. Do not give every homework assignment a 20% course weight.

Points-based categories

If assignments within a category are weighted by points possible, calculating the category percentage may require total points earned ÷ total points possible rather than simply averaging assignment percentages.

Weighted Grades vs Points-Based Grades

A points-based course may not require explicit category weights. If every assignment contributes according to points possible, the course grade is often:

This is mathematically a weighted average of assignment percentages where each assignment's weight is proportional to its points possible. A 100-point exam naturally counts more than a 10-point quiz.

Why averaging percentages can be wrong in a points system

Suppose you score 10/10 on a quiz and 50/100 on an exam. Averaging 100% and 50% gives 75%, but the actual points grade is 60/110 = 54.55%. The exam is worth ten times as many points.

Weighted Grade vs GPA

A course weighted grade and GPA are different calculations. Weighted grade usually combines percentages within one course. GPA typically combines course grade points using credit hours or another institutional system.

Why Normalizing Weights Works

Suppose scores are 80, 90 and 100 with weights 2, 3 and 5:

(80×2 + 90×3 + 100×5) ÷ 10 = 93%

If you multiply every weight by 10, the weights become 20, 30 and 50:

(80×20 + 90×30 + 100×50) ÷ 100 = 93%

The result is unchanged because only the relative proportions matter.

1. Taking a simple average when weights differ

This gives every item equal importance and can materially distort the result.
