Unit pricing is the cost of a product for one standardized unit of quantity. That might be a price per ounce, pound, gram, kilogram, milliliter, liter, fluid ounce, gallon, item, meter, foot, square meter or square foot. The useful unit depends on what the product is sold by. The central idea is simple: compare like with like.
How to Calculate Unit Price
If a package price and quantity already use the unit you want to compare, divide the price by the quantity:
Unit Price = Total Product Price ÷ Package QuantityFor example, a 32-ounce product costing $4.99 has a unit price of $4.99 ÷ 32, or about $0.156 per ounce. A 14-ounce alternative costing $3.19 is about $0.228 per ounce. Although the second package costs less at checkout, the first provides more product for each dollar.
When packages use different but compatible units, conversion comes first. A 2-pound package and a 24-ounce package cannot be compared by dividing their sticker prices by the displayed numbers alone. Two pounds equals 32 ounces, so both quantities should be expressed on the same basis before calculating their unit prices.
Why Unit Price Is More Useful Than Sticker Price
The shelf or advertised price answers “How much will I pay for this package?” Unit price answers a different question: “How much am I paying for a consistent amount of the product?” Both matter. A larger package can have a lower unit price while still being the wrong purchase if it exceeds your budget, spoils before use, is difficult to store, or includes more than you need.
Unit pricing is especially useful when package sizes change. A familiar-looking package can contain less product even if its total price stays similar. Comparing the cost per ounce, gram, liter or item makes changes in package quantity easier to see.
Supported Measurement Types
The calculator keeps fundamentally different measurement types separate. Weight is compared with weight, liquid volume with liquid volume, count with count, length with length, and area with area. This prevents misleading comparisons such as treating one fluid ounce as one ounce of weight.

How the Unit Conversion Works
Each compatible measurement is converted to an internal base unit. Weight uses grams, liquid volume uses milliliters, length uses meters and area uses square meters. Count needs no physical conversion. Once both package quantities share the same base unit, their prices can be divided by those converted quantities.
This approach means you can compare kilograms with pounds, liters with US fluid ounces, meters with feet, or square meters with square feet without manually converting either package first. The displayed comparison unit is chosen to keep the result understandable rather than forcing every answer into the smallest possible unit.

Examples of Unit Price Comparisons
Example 1: two packages measured in ounces
Suppose Product A costs $4.99 for 32 ounces and Product B costs $3.19 for 14 ounces. Product A costs about $0.156 per ounce, while Product B costs about $0.228 per ounce. Product A therefore has the lower unit price even though its package price is higher.
Example 2: pounds versus ounces
Suppose one bag costs $8.40 for 2 pounds and another costs $6.90 for 24 ounces. Two pounds is 32 ounces. The first bag costs about $0.263 per ounce; the second costs about $0.288 per ounce. The 2-pound bag is cheaper per ounce.
Example 3: multipacks
A 12-pack costing $9.60 works out to $0.80 per item. An 18-pack costing $13.50 works out to $0.75 per item. If the individual items are genuinely comparable, the 18-pack has the lower price per item.
Example 4: liters versus milliliters
A 1.5-liter bottle contains 1,500 milliliters. If it costs $4.20, its price is $0.0028 per milliliter, or $2.80 per liter. A 900-milliliter bottle at $2.70 is $3.00 per liter. Comparing on the same unit reveals the 1.5-liter bottle as the lower unit-price option.

Comparing Sale Prices, Coupons and Membership Deals
For a sale or coupon comparison, enter the price you would actually pay for the package after the applicable product discount. If a discount requires buying several packages, calculate the total amount paid and total quantity received on the same basis. A “buy two” offer should not be compared with a single package unless both the cost and quantity reflect what you must purchase.
Membership fees, delivery charges, taxes and basket-wide promotions can complicate the comparison. If a fee applies to the entire order rather than one product, assigning all of it to a single package may exaggerate that product's effective unit cost. Use the calculator for the product-level comparison and consider order-level costs separately when they materially affect your decision.
When the Cheapest Unit Price Is Not the Best Purchase
A unit price comparison isolates quantity and price. It does not automatically make the cheapest unit-price package the best choice for every shopper. Consider:
- Waste and spoilage: a bulk package is not a bargain if part of it will be discarded.
- Cash flow: the lower unit price may require a much larger upfront payment.
- Storage: large packages can require space you do not have.
- Quality differences: two products with similar names may differ in concentration, material, ingredients or performance.
- Usable quantity: drained weight, concentrate ratios or portions can matter more than headline package size.
- Extra costs: shipping, service charges, taxes or required memberships can change the effective total cost.
Unit Price vs Price per Serving
Price per serving and unit price answer different questions. Unit price normally uses an objective measurement such as weight, volume or count. Price per serving divides cost by a stated or chosen number of servings. Serving sizes can differ between products or between how people actually use them, so they are not always a neutral basis for comparison.
For straightforward retail value comparisons, use the same physical unit where possible. Use price per serving when the serving itself is the meaningful quantity and both products define or use servings in a genuinely comparable way.
Unit Price vs Cost per 100 Units
Very small unit prices can be difficult to read. A price of $0.0034 per gram is mathematically correct but $0.34 per 100 grams may be easier to understand. Multiplying both products' unit prices by the same factor does not change which one is cheaper. Retail unit-price conventions therefore sometimes use 100 grams, 100 milliliters, 100 count or another practical quantity.
Common Unit Pricing Mistakes
Comparing the package numbers without converting units
A package marked “2 lb” does not contain less than a package marked “24 oz” simply because 2 is smaller than 24. Unit labels are part of the quantity. Convert first.
Confusing ounces with fluid ounces
An ounce is a unit of weight or mass in ordinary US retail use, while a fluid ounce is a unit of volume. They are not interchangeable without knowing the density of the substance. This calculator intentionally treats them as different measurement types.
Ignoring the actual price paid
If a coupon or discount changes the checkout price, use the applicable final product price for the comparison. Conversely, do not subtract a promotion you are not eligible to receive.
Assuming bigger always means cheaper
Large packages often have lower unit prices, but not always. Promotions, package positioning, brand pricing and retailer strategy can make a smaller package cheaper per unit.
Comparing unlike products only because their units match
Two products can both be priced per ounce and still not be substitutes. Concentrated detergent and ready-to-use detergent, for example, may require different amounts per use. Unit price is most meaningful when the products deliver a reasonably comparable function.
Unit Pricing and Shrinkflation
When a manufacturer reduces package contents while keeping the package price similar, the change can be difficult to notice from the front of the package alone. Unit price exposes the effect because a smaller denominator raises the cost per unit unless the total price falls proportionally. Recording unit prices over time can therefore make package-size changes easier to evaluate.
Accuracy, Rounding and Limitations
The calculator keeps more precision internally than it displays. Displayed monetary values are rounded for readability, so manually subtracting rounded figures may occasionally differ slightly from the internally calculated difference. Enter the net quantity that is relevant to the product comparison and use consistent, accurate package information.
