How to Use the Topsoil Calculator

Choose US customary or metric measurements, then select the project shape. Rectangle or square works for most lawns, borders and raised beds. Circle is useful for round beds and tree islands. Known area is best when you already have a measured square-foot or square-meter value, including an irregular site that you have split into smaller shapes and added together.

  1. Measure the footprint. Enter length and width, diameter, or the known area.
  2. Enter the finished topsoil depth. This is the target soil layer after placement or settling, not the depth of soil in a loose delivery pile.

Topsoil Calculation Formula

For a uniform topsoil layer, volume is area multiplied by depth. The calculator converts all inputs to compatible units before performing the multiplication.

In US customary mode, cubic feet are converted to cubic yards by dividing by 27. In metric mode, the primary purchasing volume is cubic meters. One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters. These are exact unit conversions; the uncertainty begins only when you introduce site variability, settling, density or supplier-specific ordering rules.

How Deep Should Topsoil Be?

There is no single correct topsoil depth for every project. The needed depth depends on whether you are lightly topdressing existing turf, creating a new lawn profile, raising a grade, establishing a planting bed or replacing poor soil. Treat depth as a project requirement, not as a calculator default.

Penn State Extension states that establishing good-quality turf commonly needs a minimum of about 4 to 6 inches of firmed or settled good-quality topsoil, and it recommends integrating part of the added topsoil into the upper subsoil to avoid an abrupt interface. Utah State University guidance for water-wise landscapes describes 8 to 12 inches as an ideal topsoil depth in that landscape context. USU also notes that when imported topsoil is added for certain turf-establishment situations, deeper additions and blending with the existing soil may be appropriate. Those recommendations illustrate why “topsoil depth” is a design choice rather than one universal number.

A 1-inch depth error can change a large order substantially

Because depth multiplies the entire area, even a small error matters on a large lawn. Over 1,000 ft², each additional inch of soil is about 83.33 ft³, or roughly 3.09 yd³. That is why checking grade stakes and measuring several points can be more valuable than adding more decimal places to the final answer.

Why Topsoil Weight Is Only an Estimate

Topsoil is not a standardized substance with one fixed density. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service material explains that bulk density depends on soil texture, organic matter and the arrangement of mineral particles. Its educational table gives average bulk-density references such as about 1.20 g/cm³ for silt loam, 1.45 g/cm³ for loam, 1.50 g/cm³ for sandy loam and 1.54 g/cm³ for loamy sand. The same NRCS guidance notes that loose, well-aggregated or organic-rich soils generally have lower bulk density, while sandy soils tend to have higher bulk density.

The calculator uses those texture values only as transparent planning references for approximate dry mineral-soil weight. They are not guarantees for a bagged or bulk commercial topsoil product. Purchased topsoil may contain compost or other organic components, and delivered soil can contain substantial moisture. Moist soil can weigh much more than a dry-density conversion suggests.

Why the blue card is volume, not tons: cubic yards or cubic meters are often the direct purchasing unit for landscape soil, and volume comes directly from the site geometry. Tonnage is useful for hauling or weight-priced suppliers, but it should remain secondary unless you have product-specific density information.

Settling, Compaction and Extra Allowance

A common competitor shortcut is to apply a fixed 5%, 10% or 20% “waste” factor to every topsoil project. That may be convenient, but it mixes several different issues. Soil can settle after placement. An uneven site can require more material than a perfect rectangular prism. Wheelbarrow and handling losses can occur. A supplier may sell only in half-yard increments. Those are different reasons for ordering extra and should not be hidden inside one universal constant.

Settling is not the same as soil compaction

Bulk density is also used as an indicator of soil compaction. NRCS notes that compaction affects infiltration, rooting depth, pore space and aeration. For landscapes and gardens, the goal is not simply to compact imported topsoil as much as possible to reduce settlement. Excessive compaction can harm root growth and water movement. Use the installation practices appropriate to the landscape, not a volume calculator as a compaction specification.

Quantity Is Only Half the Topsoil Decision

A calculator can tell you how much volume occupies a space; it cannot tell you whether a soil is suitable for the intended plants. Utah State University Extension warns that materials sold as “topsoil” may not always be true surface topsoil and recommends considering properties such as salinity, pH, texture, organic matter, coarse fragments and nutrient status. USU also recommends assessing purchased soil for suitability with the existing site in landscape establishment situations.

That means two deliveries with the same cubic-yard quantity can perform very differently. Before a large purchase, ask what the product actually contains. For planting applications, consider a soil test when appropriate. Check whether the material is screened, whether it contains significant stones or debris, whether compost has been blended in, and whether the texture fits the existing soil and drainage conditions.

Abrupt soil layers can create problems

Extension guidance commonly emphasizes blending or creating a transition between imported topsoil and existing subsoil rather than simply laying a thin layer of unrelated soil on a compacted surface. For a new lawn or landscape, proper subgrade preparation, drainage and soil integration can matter as much as the calculated volume.

Bulk Topsoil vs Bagged Topsoil

Bag count should be calculated from the bag's labeled volume, not from a guessed bag weight. Topsoil, garden soil and soil blends are commonly sold in different package volumes, and their weights can change with moisture. The calculator therefore lets you enter cubic feet, liters or cubic meters per bag and rounds the result up to whole bags.

Bulk delivery is often easier for larger jobs because dozens of bags create more packaging, lifting and handling. Bagged soil can still be convenient for small beds, isolated repairs or sites where a bulk pile cannot be dumped. Compare the actual delivered bulk price—including delivery fees and minimum loads—with the price of enough bags for the same volume.

Worked Topsoil Examples

New lawn area

A 30 × 20 ft area at 4 in finished depth is 200 ft³, or about 7.41 yd³. With a user-chosen 10% allowance, the adjusted quantity is about 8.15 yd³. If the supplier sells by 0.5 yd³, the order rounds up to 8.5 yd³.

Garden bed

A 12 × 4 ft bed filled 8 in deep needs 32 ft³, or about 1.19 yd³ before any allowance. If 1 ft³ bags are used, the geometric volume alone is 32 bags.

Metric landscape bed

A 6 × 3 m bed with a 10 cm topsoil layer needs 1.8 m³. With a 5% allowance the adjusted volume is 1.89 m³; a supplier selling in 0.25 m³ increments would require a 2.0 m³ order.

Example: why supplier rounding should be separate

Suppose your measured project needs 3.62 yd³ and you have no reason to add a settling allowance. If the supplier sells only in 0.5 yd³ increments, the practical order is 4.0 yd³. Calling the extra 0.38 yd³ “10% waste” would be misleading—the actual reason is supplier rounding. The calculator keeps that distinction visible.
