There is no single fuel-cost formula format used everywhere. Many countries express consumption as liters per 100 kilometers, some drivers use kilometers per liter, US vehicles commonly display miles per US gallon, and Imperial MPG uses a larger gallon. A useful global calculator must distinguish these systems rather than treating every MPG or gallon as identical.

How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the one-way distance. Choose kilometers or miles.

When fuel consumption is known in liters per 100 kilometers, the basic calculation is straightforward:

Fuel Needed (L) = Distance (km) × L/100 km ÷ 100 Fuel Cost = Fuel Needed × Fuel Price per Liter

If you use another fuel-economy or price unit, the calculator first converts it internally. This keeps the calculation mathematically consistent while allowing you to enter values in the units familiar to you.

L/100 km, km/L and MPG: What's the Difference?

Fuel economy can be expressed as either consumption or distance per unit of fuel. L/100 km is a consumption measure: lower values mean less fuel is used for the same distance. km/L and MPG are distance-per-fuel measures: higher values mean the vehicle travels farther on the same amount of fuel.

US MPG vs Imperial MPG

US MPG and Imperial MPG are not interchangeable. A US liquid gallon is about 3.78541 liters, while an Imperial gallon is about 4.54609 liters. Because the Imperial gallon is larger, the same vehicle produces a higher numerical MPG figure when expressed in Imperial MPG than in US MPG.

Important: If your dashboard, manufacturer specification or fuel-economy source says MPG, determine whether it means US MPG or Imperial MPG. Choosing the wrong gallon standard can materially change the estimate.

Fuel Price per Liter or per Gallon

Fuel is sold in different volume units around the world. This calculator accepts price per liter, per US gallon and per Imperial gallon. It converts the selected price to an internal price per liter before calculating cost.

The currency itself does not change the mathematics. A price of 1.70 per liter can represent dollars, pounds, euros or another currency; the selected currency simply identifies the monetary unit of the result.

How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Round Trip

If the return route is approximately the same distance as the outward route, a round trip is twice the one-way distance:

Round-Trip Distance = One-Way Distance × 2

If the return route is substantially different, calculate the actual combined distance instead of relying on a simple doubling assumption. You can enter half of the known combined distance and use round trip, or more simply use one-way mode and enter the entire planned route distance as the trip distance.

Extra Driving and Route Allowance

Mapped origin-to-destination distance may not include sightseeing, food stops, local driving, detours or searching for parking. The optional extra-driving percentage increases the actual trip distance used in the calculation.

Adjusted Distance = Trip Distance × (1 + Extra Driving % ÷ 100)

No fixed percentage is forced because trip uncertainty differs. A direct commute and a multi-day road trip do not need the same assumption.

Fuel Cost per Person

For shared travel, enter the number of people splitting fuel. The calculator divides the total estimated fuel cost evenly:

Fuel Cost per Person = Total Fuel Cost ÷ Number of People

This is an equal fuel-only split. It does not automatically include tolls, parking, vehicle rental, insurance, maintenance or other expenses. Travelers can decide separately how those costs should be shared.

Fuel Cost Examples

Example 1: Metric road trip

A 300 km trip in a vehicle that uses 7.5 L/100 km requires:

300 × 7.5 ÷ 100 = 22.5 L At 1.70 per liter: 22.5 × 1.70 = 38.25

The estimated fuel cost is 38.25 in the selected currency.

Example 2: US MPG and price per US gallon

Suppose a trip is 240 miles, the vehicle averages 30 US MPG, and fuel costs $3.60 per US gallon. Fuel required can be understood directly as:

240 miles ÷ 30 miles/gallon = 8 US gallons 8 × $3.60 = $28.80

Example 3: Round trip with extra driving

A destination is 180 km away. A round trip is 360 km. Adding a 5% allowance gives 378 km. At 6.5 L/100 km:

378 × 6.5 ÷ 100 = 24.57 L

Multiply 24.57 liters by the local fuel price to estimate total fuel cost.

Why Real-World Fuel Economy Can Differ

Published fuel-economy figures are useful reference points, but actual consumption can differ. Traffic, acceleration, cruising speed, hills, wind, temperature, tire condition, roof racks, vehicle load, air-conditioning use, towing and short-trip operation can all influence fuel use.

For personal budgeting, your own recent real-world average is often more representative than a laboratory or advertised figure. If your vehicle displays a long-term average consumption value, that can be a useful input when it reflects similar driving conditions.

Fuel Cost per Kilometer or Mile

Cost per distance is useful for comparing routes, estimating commuting expenses and understanding how fuel prices affect driving cost.

Fuel Cost per Distance = Total Fuel Cost ÷ Adjusted Trip Distance

The calculator reports this in your selected distance unit. Remember that it represents fuel cost only, not the full cost of operating a vehicle.

Fuel Cost vs Total Driving Cost

Fuel is only one component of vehicle cost. A complete driving-cost analysis may also include depreciation, maintenance, tires, servicing, insurance, registration, financing, tolls and parking. Some of these are fixed or semi-fixed rather than directly proportional to trip distance.

This calculator intentionally focuses on fuel so the result remains transparent and does not impose assumptions about vehicle ownership, insurance systems, taxes or maintenance costs that vary widely between users and countries.

Using a Fuel Calculator for Travel Planning

Before a long journey, estimate the route distance, use a realistic fuel-economy figure and enter a representative fuel price. If prices vary substantially along the route, run several scenarios or use an average price appropriate to your planned stops.

For cross-border travel, currencies and fuel units can change. Because this calculator separates currency from price volume and separates distance from economy units, you can adapt the inputs without changing the underlying method.

How to Estimate Fuel Economy from Your Own Driving

If you know how much fuel was used over a measured distance, you can derive real-world economy. In metric terms:

L/100 km = Liters Used ÷ Kilometers Driven × 100 km/L = Kilometers Driven ÷ Liters Used

For MPG, divide miles driven by gallons used, making sure the gallon type matches the MPG system you intend to use.

Does Idling Affect the Estimate?

Yes. A distance-based formula cannot perfectly capture extended idling because fuel can be consumed while distance remains zero. Heavy congestion, warming a vehicle while stationary or long idle periods can therefore make actual fuel use higher than a simple distance-and-economy estimate.

Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

This calculator is designed for liquid-fuel consumption. A plug-in hybrid may use both fuel and electricity, so a fuel-only result may not represent the complete energy cost. Battery-electric vehicles require an electricity-cost calculation based on energy consumption, typically kWh per distance, and electricity price per kWh.
