Discount Formula

The standard percentage discount formula is:

Discount amount = original price × (discount percentage ÷ 100)

Sale price = original price − discount amount

Or in one step:

How to Calculate the Percentage You Save

If you know the original and reduced prices, the percentage reduction is:

Discount % = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100

If an $80 item is reduced to $60, the saving is $20. Dividing $20 by the $80 original price gives 0.25, or 25%.

Stacked Discounts: Why 20% + 10% Is Not 30%

Sequential discounts are one of the most common sources of shopping-math mistakes. If a $100 item is first reduced by 20%, its price becomes $80. An extra 10% discount is then 10% of $80, which is $8. The final pre-tax price is $72.

The total saving is $28, so the effective discount is 28%, not 30%.

Stacked price = original × (1 − first discount) × (1 − second discount)

Another useful example is 50% off followed by another 50% off. The first discount takes $100 to $50. The second removes half of $50, leaving $25. The effective discount is therefore 75%, not 100%.

A $75 item with 20% off saves $15 because $75 × 0.20 = $15. The discounted price is $60.

How to Compare Discounts Between Stores

When two retailers use different promotion structures, compare the actual final price rather than the headline percentage. One shop might advertise 30% off, while another offers 20% off plus an extra 15% coupon. The second promotion has an effective discount of 32%, because $100 becomes $80 and then $68.

Also consider delivery charges, membership fees, cashback restrictions, minimum-spend requirements and return policies. A discount calculator can compare the price reduction, but it cannot determine the overall value of every promotion.

How to Find the Original Price from a Sale Price

If the discounted price and discount percentage are known, rearrange the standard formula:

Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount percentage ÷ 100)

If an item costs $63 after 30% off, you are paying 70% of the original price. $63 ÷ 0.70 = $90, so the original price was $90.

A common mistake is to add 30% back to $63. That does not reverse a 30% reduction because the two percentages use different bases.

Discount vs. Cashback

A direct discount reduces the purchase price immediately. Cashback generally involves receiving some value after the purchase and may have conditions, delays, caps or account requirements. A “10% cashback” offer should therefore not automatically be treated as identical to 10% off at checkout.

If you are comparing them purely mathematically and the cashback is guaranteed on the full eligible amount, calculate the checkout price and cashback separately rather than entering cashback as a stacked discount.

Discount vs. Coupon vs. Promo Code

The mathematics depends on how the promotion is applied, not what it is called. A coupon that removes 10% from an already-discounted sale price behaves like a second stacked discount. Adding stacked percentages together

20% followed by 10% is 28% off overall, not 30%, because the second percentage applies to a smaller price.
